On Oct. 10, 2018, a Category 5 storm, Hurricane Michael, caused catastrophic wind and storm-surge damage at Tyndall Air Force Base and the surrounding communities in Northwest Florida. Tyndall’s rebuild commitment was to the Installation of the Future by leveraging resilient, sustainable and SMART systems for mission assurance, cost efficiency, and social and environmental sustainability.
The overarching strategy is “layers of protection” that leverage traditional grey infrastructure, green infrastructure and nature-based solutions. The strategy includes new design policy for higher wind load standards for structures and a revised design flood elevation that accounts for sea-level rise and storm surge. These projects provide the community additional co-benefits, including eco-system restoration, recreational opportunities and economic benefits. A robust stakeholder engagement strategy enabled grant funding success for design and construction of the coastal projects.
